It was sad to hear that Leamington's Cavin Woodward died at 62 on the 26th of February, as both his wife Carol and Gavin were such friendly people, not to be forgotten.Alastair Aitken remarked.
It was always amazing to think that Cavin Woodward, at the height of his powers, as a World Ultra Distance record holder, told me he trained regularly only 30 miles a week but of course he added the many races to that figure when he did them, That of course put his mileage up considerably for the week on so many occasions!
In 1974 he won the Woodford to Southend road race in 3:42.45 from Ian Burgess (Southampton & Eastleigh), Gerry Archer of Hillingdon and first veteran Ron Bentley of Tipton. Afterwards he talked about his love for Ultra distance
"Everyone is more friendly and it is not so cut-throat. If I was an international I would not be able to run in all the races I enjoy doing'
He won the 'Old' Highgate Harriers London Marathon in 1974, that was round the hilly roads of North West London, finishing in Copthall Stadium. He won in the modest time of 2:34.19 but with blisters on the balls of his feet and in 74F. He went on in 1976 to come second in the famous Comrades Marathon in South Africa in 5:49.19.
His respective World records he achieved in 1975 For 50 miles in 4hrs 58minutes and 53 seconds. 100k (6:25.26), 150k (10:44.55). He also won the London to Brighton. A race that started at Big Ben and finished on the sea front at Brighton.
