Surrey XC Champs 2010

PASCAR OWOR of Belgrave Harriers, is starting to get serious about his running again, after winning the Surrey Senior cross country Championships at LLoyd Park reports Alastair Aitken for Runners Digest.

Now on 70 miles a week, he intends racing over 1500, 3000 and 5000 in the Summer and looks towards the Olympics of 2012, running for Uganda over 1500. " I have run 1:46.37 (2004) and I have been in two Olympic Games running the 800 (2000 and 2004). I have no medals to show for it so, it will be my last chance to try for that. I intend being able to run 3:36 and I want to gain a place for those Games in London. I am trying to come back again and give myself another chance."

The race on Saturday was over an undulating three laps of LLoyd Park. Nick Torry, said he felt heavy legged but still went into the lead straight away. It maybe that his training and prolific racing made him tired but he still went, the very next day, to Wokingham and did a 68 min half marathon!  Anyway, back to the race, Torry led after a lap but had been joined by James McMullan, 2003 winner Paul Rogers, who has been busy doing 12 hour shifts as a plumber and Owor.

It was after two laps that Torry had opened up a lead of 30 metres over Rogers, Owor and McMullan. In fifth place, on his own, was Alan Barnes, taking Herne Hill Harriers to a team victory with Belgrave and Hercules Wimbledon following them home.

On the third lap, with just over a mile to go on the hill, Owor struck and, came in with a time of 40.15. He was followed by Torry (Serpentine) 40.22, Rogers (AFD) 40.38, McMullan (THH) 40.54 and Barnes (HHH) 41.58.

 Teams : 1st - HHH

2nd - Belgrave Harriers

3rd - Hercules Wimbledon

Senior Ladies

SOPHIE MORRIS went to the front after a mile in the Women's race and was never headed again. 1 Sophie Morris (WSEH), 30.32, 2  Liz Kipling (Ranelagh)  31.24, 3 Karen Ellison (HHH) 31.31 and 4 Sarah Murphy (Belgrave) 31.32.

The Team winners were Ranelagh from Herne Hill Harriers and Thames Hare & Hounds.

Sophie Morris, a Data Communications Officer with the Army, talked about her comeback " I had a break from March to September last year. Richard Partridge offered to coach me so I then went down the track. After today I feel It's good to be back'

When she started and her favourite results:-

" It was when I had my two children that I took up athletics competitively in 2003'

She continued " My favourite results were the road relays, I love them! Coming 2nd in the AAA's 5k (And World Trials July 2007), and running in the Ekiden Relay (November 2007) which was a great experience"

U20/U17 combined men.

The powerful duo of Liam White (U17) and Alex Robinson (U20) from Hercules Wimbledon ran together to secure a HW double.

U15 men

William Robinson (Reigate Priory AC - 6th last year) secured a well deserved victory from the talented Peter Chambers (Croydon) by a close 7 seconds. Running head to head for much of the beginning and with Bradley of WSE&H and Nolan of Oxted County School he pulled away in the latter half to claim victory.

U13 Men

HHH set themselves up for the day with a fine 1-2 in the U13 race with the duo of  Yemane and Hussey. These exceptional runs were unable to secure team victory due to the depth of WSE&H but demonstrate the quality of the field for the Inter counties. Yemane swept into the lead early doors followed by newcomer Hyde (HW) who just got edged towards the finish by Hussey and Charlie Wyllie (Dorking and MV) who were unable to retain their team title. Note: 6 less teams than last year finished, possibly due to the Nationals next week?
