2011 Race Report - Geoff Moulden Wimbledon 10 2011
Exclusive report for Runners Digest By Alastair Aitken...
Belgrave's Pascar Owor (32:42), led from start to finish in the uncharacteriscally hot weather on October the 1st.
It was all in brilliant sunshine.
The order of the first three never changed after the first mile. Owor gradually pulled away from Basil Wallace (36:00)
and the first woman Lucy Macalister (36:06) was in third position overall. She remarked afterwards "It is good to support the race as Hercules have done a great job hosting it again."
However, there were so many races round the country in the weekend with several local Wimbledon one's on the day. That was the reason organiser Richard Xerri' was robbed of many entries he could have had.
The annual race dates back to 1961 and last year five internationals took part in the race. For that reason alone it is unlikely to fade away.
Owor, who twice made the Uganda Olympic team was following up his third place of last year. He had, the previous week run the third fastest time at the Southern Six Sage road relays at Aldershot plus running the fastest leg at the Biggleswade relay the day before his run in the Geoff Moulden.
PASCAR OWOR, is in his second year of studying at Roehampton University. He feels that takes up a lot of his time but Like Phil Wicks, who he trains with twice a week, hopes to make next years' Olympics in London.
Although that is paramount to Owor he also wants also to do well in the cross-country season and win the Surrey again. He is 32 in December and will start his speed work soon, as he needs to do 3:37 00 for 1500 or 13:42 for 5000 to make the Uganda Olympic team. He felt, at the Geoff Moulden this year that had last year's winner Ryan McLeod been present he felt becauase he is stronger now, he would have hung on to him as he had prepared for that!
He felt his best British result so far was 29:28 in the Bristol 10k in May but looked forward to trying to improve to 28 minutes.
About the Geoff Moulden this year " Not a lot of opposition but I train here and also like to motivate the organisers as this is my training ground. It is good to come and run sometimes in you local community."
BASIL WALLACE of Herne Hill Harriers, who was pleased with his position of second said ' it was very hot and generally a slow course with the hill. It is hard to judge as well of 2 or 4 unique laps."
Basil who is 38 now said " My best 10k time is 33:26 on the road this year. However, to-day was a nice day so not complaining that it was hot.'
He added " I did not actually take up running till I was in my 30's I was a sprinter at school but unfortunately I did not keep it up and able to go through the middle distances after that. I got lazy when I was 14!"
LUCY MCALISTER, who ran 36:06 " I have not done 10k's for while. it is good to start the season with a challenge and then try and get back to 10k shape before too long."
Her favourite event " I did 2:36:26 marathon in Austin Texas in 2008. I have not hit that since. Perhaps I will have to go back to 'Cowboy Country' to get a PB!'
Lucy looked back at her athletics life "I started at Wellington School in Somerset and then continued to do English Schools cross country. Then GB teams for the juniors. I had a break till I ran at University again and did the Varsity Match and now run for Thames Hare & Hounds. I started marathon running after that and going out to Australia & New Zealand where Ultra distances are really popular'
'My husband and I married in 2008 and he has done a 3:18 marathon and doing cycling competitively"
Fifth in the race was first veteran 50 year old KNUT HEVGOLD in 37:47 and he was ahead of the first two who from VETS AC Paul Sanderson (39:00) and Nigel Burnell (39:14).
Knut Hevgold has an impressive history." I have been running since I was 12' He remarked and originally came from Trondheim, Norway and now runs for Belgrave. In 1990 he ran 2:14:12 for the marathon and 13:42 for 5000. He ran for Norway from 10 to 15 years. He is an independant trader in futures.
Why does he still run after such a long time in the sport
" I enjoy running I really do"
2010 race report - Rain of doom beset the 2009 W10 for several hours the day before and throughout the night. Memories of 2007 were brought back when rain graced the skies all throughout the event. This year the morning brought bright sun and humid weather although puddles and damp ground were order of the day.
The front end was sharp with Ben Moreau, Ryan McCleod, Tom Bedford, Paskar Owor and Fraser Thompson soon to the fore. Just behind were Tim Elsey, Joe Murwood, Basil Wallace, Justin Kelly, Jamel Mohamed and James Savage. Three AFD in the front secured a 3 man victory for the AFD bad boys.
